Re: World Background Maps

Post by theclumsygeek » June 4th, 2020, 4:04 am

Thank you guys!

I also got some inputs from ProMods (ScuL and bricksathome). I would like to share their POV so we are aware of the different sides of the story.
It is not my goal to convince one or the other side to switch, but I would like to understand where the differences are coming from:
  1. SCS started with a map projection (let's call it SCS-old).
  2. After the ATS rescale, SCS decided to use a different map projection (let's call that SCS-new).
  3. SCS BG map has moved to SCS-new since 1.30/1.31.
  4. ProMods used SCS-old until 2.45, but moved to SCS-new as of 2.46. This is why ME is consistent to SCS BG map.

And for ease of comparison, I also paste here Bengan's/paokkerkir's POV:
  1. SCS started with a map projection (let's call it SCS-old).
  2. After the ATS rescale, SCS decided to use a different map projection (let's call that SCS-new).
  3. However, the actual BG map of SCS right now as of 1.37 is still using SCS-old.
  4. The assumption/alignment(?) is that SCS will switch their BG map to SCS-new as they expand to farther areas from the center.
  5. The World Background Maps by Bengan uses SCS-new.
  6. ProMods uses SCS-old, +/- a few differences, but this is mainly why ME is consistent with the current BG map of SCS as of 1.37.
Differences start from #3 onwards.

So I put it to philosophical differences, and everyone is free to do what they believe in. We will support you either way!

Update: I am also sharing these POVs in the SCS forums in the off-chance that SCS will reply and provide guidelines on which projection should be used.

My pov:
Ets2 1.37 uses SCS-new as far as I am aware.
I remember in I think it was 1.35 when they switched from old to new.
Promods used scs old until 2.46.
We know that bengan is using the same projection that promods was using before 2.46, this is the reason why promods 2.45 alligned perfectly with bengans map.
Promods adapted to scs new, which is why promods now fits the scs new background map used in 1.37.
Bengan has not adapted his projection, it has been the same since it started.
Of course, since SCS and promods changed, bengans map no longer matches either SCS or promods.

NEW EXPERIMENT!
Ok, let's judge facts not fiction and words of person X or Y. This is the same Promods 2.46 combo loaded with both 1.27 SCS background and 1.37 background.
Sadly, 1.27 doesnt have nothing in ME area to make a comparidson, but you can see the map alignement of Promods 2.46 with both backgrounds.
If Promods switched 2.46 to the SCS-new projection we will see the differences when we load new Promods with new 1.37 background versus old 1.27 background. Sadly, the placement looks the same to me.

@Arayas

Thank you for your work, which will make you tired.
Looks the same to me. However, I do not understand the meaning.

If Promods switched projection, the new map with new projection should be shifted with old 1.27 background. And is not. I can asume they are under the old projection.

@Clumsy
Thank you man. You may sometimes be silent, but if you say something then it is immediately spot on. :fan_1: :fan_1:
It all comes down to whether SCS has switched to a new map projection since version 1.30 / 1.31. And what Arayas has now shown this is not the case.
I hope that SCS can indeed clarify the question.

I am also happy that the heat is out of the discussion.

Ah, what arayas has said changes a lot.
I guess what I remembered as SCS changing the background was just when they changed how it looked.
I thought that when they changed it they also updated it's projection.
I'll let mandelsoft know as well.

this is implying that the background map in 1.37 is infact using the new projection, which would prove that bengans projection is wrong after all.
i have asked for confirmation just to be sure.
edit: bengan, did you get your paramaters from the climate.sii file mentioned?

Just for the record! Max says this at the finish of his post.
so aside of local tweaks the projection of both games is (and most probably will be) lambert conical, which is overall best (preserving distances,
areas and shapes to good degree). its exact parameters are in environmental data (climate.sii)
In BOTH ETS2 and ATS I use Lambert Conical map projection with the parameters taken from climate.sii definition file. Go figure!

EDIT: It's even documented WAY BACK in this topic for those who can read!
