The "Schienenbus" - some years ago they offered historic trips on the railway to our cultural heritage "Zollverein", one of the biggest coal mine in Europe, closed in 1986 and became a museum and festival area some years later. They closed the Schienenbus connection unfortunately. Was a private company and they went down to rock bottom. Now the rails are collecting rust and are the home to bees and other insects.
There are plenty of abandoned railway lines in and around Essen, mostly former freight only lines used to transport coal and steel. Some of them were turned into bike lanes. They removed the rails but left the signals there and they still work. Manually driven, of course. It's pretty hardcore to move them from red to green. Or the leftover changings are very brutal.
